چکیده

This paper examines the problem of polygon digitizing, and suggests an inversion of the traditional approach for polygons of the environmental type, where each individual polygon, rather than its boundaries, is of primary interest. Many workers in geology, forestry, soil science, etc. have found the tedious specification of boundary arcs and their topological linkage and editing to be a major block to productivity. An alternative digitizing approach is described using Thiessen/Voronoi polygons to generate topology automatically and to reduce map digitizing times significantly. The digitizing of representative points within each polygon is performed using the GIS. The stand-alone Voronoi polygon building and boundary extraction module then generates linked arcs that are returned to the GIS for further analysis. Examples of the productivity enhancement in a production environment are given, along with the algorithms used. 1. The digitizing problem ‘When he killed the Mudjekeewis, of the skins he made him mittens, Made them with the fur side inside, made them with the skin side outside. He, to get the warm side inside, put the inside (skin side) outside; He, to get the cold side outside, put the outside (fur side) inside. That’s why he put the fur side inside, why he put the skin side outside; Why he turned them inside outside.’ Anon., after Longfellow, ‘The Song of Hiawatha’. In the early days of thematic mapping by computer, it was taken for granted that the primary object type being manipulated was the polygon, as it was the map object to which the attributes of interest were attached. This naturally led to the digitizing 0269-3798/96 $12.00

Feasibility study on ecotourism potential areas using remote sensing and geographic information system (case study: abbasabad forest area, veresk, iran)

Ecotourism as the most attractive subset of the tourism industry can contribute to natural resource conservation and local development. Although great numbers of people annually visit Abbasabad area, in Veresk, Mazandaran, to enjoy its brilliant landscape and moderate ecologic condition, there is no applicable plan for many natural attractive zones in this area. As a result, some specific well ...

Using a Fuzzy Surface-based Cartographic Representation to Decrease Digitizing Efforts for Natural Phenomena

On a previously-digitized map, a series of 685 points were screen-digitized so as to represent major spatial features of each polygon composing 17 forest types having inherently uncertain boundaries; three forest types having precise boundaries were treated as such. From these points and three exact types, surfaces were generated which provided weights of the certainty of having each of the 20 ...

An Analysis of Key Propellants Affecting Livestock Return in Forests with a Futuristic Approach (Study in Golestan Province)

Today, livestock outflows from the forests of the north of the country have created environmental and social challenges and problems that have caused concern to natural resource policy makers.  The re-emergence of livestock and ranchers illegally in the forests for various reasons has created disputes and tensions with conservation systems. In this regard, the present study was conducted to ana...

Forest Road Design in Stable Location to Minimize Erosion (Case Study: Vaston District)

Soil erosion is of the most important environmental challenges and factors of forest damage, which is, occur because of the land use change, road construction and lack of vegetation cover. Forest soil is naturally penetrable but forest roads are not. This issue causes the flows runoff on road surface and washes soil particles. Thus, forest roads must be planned and constructed accurately. So, t...

Monthly runoff forecasting by means of artificial neural networks (ANNs)

Over the last decade or so, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have become one of the most promising tools formodelling hydrological processes such as rainfall runoff processes. However, the employment of a single model doesnot seem to be an appropriate approach for modelling such a complex, nonlinear, and discontinuous process thatvaries in space and time. For this reason, this study aims at de...
